CASE STUDY: Imane Khelif at Paris Olympics 2024

A once-in-a-lifetime rollercoaster journey of disempowerment & empowerment.

A Today let’s talk about Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who has been subject of online harassment and accusations that she’s not a woman (by people like Elon Musk, Donald Trump, J.K Rowling & others), has since won a gold medal at this year’s Olympic games in Paris and is currently taking further action by filing a legal complain at the Paris correctional court against social media platform X (formerly Twitter) for allowing online harassment campaign agains her during her participation at the Olympic games.

BACKGROUND

Just for the record, Imane has been born a woman, is currently a woman, and has always competed as a woman boxer. She comes from a small village in Algeria, has grown up in a poor family and when she was younger she was selling scrap metal in order to pay for her bus ticket and go to boxing training.

She came to the spotlight after winning a boxing match in just 46 seconds against Angela Carini (Italy) on 1st August 2024 at the Paris Olympics games. After the game, Angela Carini has publicly said that she “has never been hit so hard in her life”. I was curious to watch the short fight (you can watch it here) and was surprised that it didn’t meet any of my expectations for aggression and violence.

But I’m not a boxing expert and I thought that I could be missing something, so I consulted a friend of mine, who is a former professional boxer. His words were: “She fights really well, very clean, is very technical, keeps a good distance and doesn’t do any nasty moves”. I further asked why did Angela Carini pulled away twice and abandoned the fight? He said “She realized she doesn’t belong there”.

Ever since this match, she’s been a victim of the so called “transvestigating”, i.e. people wanting to investigate if another person is transgender. This has raised a lot of concerns about beauty standards in sports and the unrealistic expectations about how women in sports should look like, as many other women have also fallen victims of these harrassments at this year’s Olympic games.

ASTROLOGY

So let’s look at her astrology and see some of her interesting natal placements as well as what is she currently going through.

We don’t have have an exact time of birth, so her natal Moon can actually be anywhere between 25 degree Scorpio to 7 degree Sagittarius, in the first case currently experiencing transiting Uranus opposition to her natal Moon, and in the second case natal Moon making a very intense conjunction with her natal Pluto and Chiron.

  • We see Sun is in Taurus, which is a very strong placements - it brings a lot of strength, perseverance, resilience, devotion and hard-work ethics and is also a common placement for many sports people.

  • Second, we see Mars in Scorpio, which is a very important placement because Mars is the planet of action and how we take action, how we use our energy and the way we fight in a literal or figurative sense. This is a very strong placements because Scorpio is ruled by Mars in traditional astrology so there is a lot of support here.

  • Mars in Scorpio provides an enormous drive and a desire to succeed in whatever a person puts their energy into - it could be people, projects, work, relationships… Mars in Scorpio is extremely goal-oriented.

  • That energy has also the potential to multiply itself but it has to be attached to the right source - a positive, generative, sustainable source, that could be a purpose, project or a person. In this case - it is her work as a boxer.

  • When a person with Mars in Scorpio has a goal and that goal is positive, generative and sustainable and not used for manipulation and self-destruction (because this is the shadow side of that placement) that person has the potential to achieve literally anything. That goal is pursued with a lot of strength, fixation on it, resilience and an enormous drive and motivation. And once achieved we have a significant improvement in status and quality of life.

CURRENT INFLUENCES

Now let’s take a look at what is going on RIGHT NOW for her - we have Pluto, the planet of power, control, transformation, manipulation, currently in Aquarius, which is squaring her natal Mars in Scorpio right now: this is a SUPER INTENSE ONCE IN A LIFETIME transit that is powerful, transformative, it could be stressful, challenging and disempowering - it has the potential to completely transform the way a person asserts themselves and takes action towards their goals by forcing them to take their agency and power back. It usually manifests through outside influences like people or organisations that try to take away and undermine one’s personal power and crush their will. It is a big test, which once passed will make her come out stronger, calmer, more whole, and much more centered.

  • This transit also provides very powerful energies that could be used constructively and a lot can be accomplished, however there can be unhealthy ego drives in someone who can affect her, which can be very frustrating to her.

  • Generally the energy is really good for winning a fight but important is to have people on her side, which I’m sure she has. And it’s important to be aware of sneaky tactics from any enemies, which we’ve seen enough of.

  • It’s a transit that can stimulate ambitions and push your desire to get ahead at any cost, work incredibly hard and achieve any goals.

  • However, this is NOT OVER YET - she is taking action to sue the social media platform X. I guess the process of disempowerment and empowerment will continue with her Pluto-Mars transit, so for about another year and a few months.

  • This is transit that is quite long and she’s been in it since last year. One of the strongest dates that Pluto hits are in:

  • 1st March 2024

  • 8th July 2024

  • 6th Jan 2025

  • 14th Oct 2025

The next super interesting thing happening to her is that her North Node is in Leo, so her life purpose is to have confidence and courageously stand up for herself, to be authentically herself and create her own destiny, to take risks and lead from the heart and to not be afraid to be in the spotlight or on stage.

On the date she won the Olympic gold medal, the Sun was exactly conjunct her natal North North, shining light and giving support for accomplishing her life mission! This is super a supportive aspect, and although it happens about once a year, she was super lucky to have this transit exactly on the day of her final boxing match.

I’m super happy for her and wish her all the best!
